STEWARDS REPORT
Wednesday, 28th July 1999 at Canterbury Park

Stewards: K. E. Kelly (Chairman), P. D. Hartmann, L. F. Morrison, K. Williams and G. Pearson, and Cadet T. Smith.

RACE 1 – Thiess Environmental Services Handicap (1st Div.) 1200m:

Yuppie, Bartolozzi, Pinnacle Road and Steel City were slow to begin. Near the 1000m Steel City ran in away from Kirin Lady, resulting in Captain Mallory being steadied when briefly crowded for room. In the incident Captain Mallory shifted in and bumped Varicool, which in turn shifted in, resulting in Princeton and Caribbean Express being inconvenienced. At about the 600m Yuppie was checked when crowded for room by Bartolozzi, which was taken in by Captain Mallory which, despite the efforts of its rider K. Moses, laid in across the heels of Caribbean Express. Throughout the middle stages Merbau hung out. Shortly after entering the straight Spinning Hill had to be steadied and altered course to the inside of the heels of Bartolozzi, which shifted out to improve. Spinning Hill then had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 100m.

RACE 2 – Aristocrat Leisure Industries Handicap (2nd Div.) 1200m:

Tiffany Heights and Tilting were slow to begin. Fullsar began awkwardly. Throughout the event Grey Marl hung out. In the early part of the straight Cranbrook brushed the running rail when tightened for room by Noble House, which shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination of Leopard Lady, which was fractious in the barriers, revealed an abrasion to the off hind hock. When questioned about the disappointing performance of Miss Zambezi, K. Moses stated that the filly travelled well in the early stages, however was reluctant to hold its position after he obtained cover. He added that Miss Zambezi was a beaten horse prior to the home turn and failed to respond to his riding in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination of Miss Zambezi did not reveal any abnormality and a swab sample was taken. Trainer Mr G. Walter stated that Miss Zambezi had done well since its first-up run and in all the circumstances was most disappointing. The only possible excuse he could offer for the filly was that she might not have appreciated being ridden forward in today’s race. Mr Walter undertook to report to the stewards the immediate racing plans for Miss Zambezi after monitoring the filly’s progress in the days subsequent to the race.

RACE 3 – Chippy’s Food Distributors Handicap 1200m:

Lord Of Grace, which suffered some abrasions to the off knee en route to the track, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon upon arrival and again behind the barriers and passed fit to start. Daunting Prospect, which was fractious in the barriers, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. Trainer Mr G. Yorke was fined $100 for failing to notify stewards that Cajun Jester would carry blinkers. The Wanderer was slow to begin. Near the 500m Cue To Call lost ground when checked off the heels of Pacific Lane. A post-race veterinary examination of Lord Of Grace revealed that the gelding had blood in its mouth and in the off nostril.

RACE 4 – Bradley Australia Handicap 1200m:

At the start Corelli was crowded for room between Cupro and Lokesa and then shortly after the start was again inconvenienced when Cupro shifted out. Shortly after entering the straight Cupro and Corelli came together as Cupro obtained a run between Corelli and Lokesa.

A post-race veterinary examination of Waalini did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 5 – Subway Superfecta 1550m:

Sion was slow to begin.

RACE 6 – Canterbury League Club Handicap 1200m:

Penguin Express, which was injured en route to the track, was a late withdrawal, at 1.58 a.m., on veterinary advice. Shortly after the start Ya Habibi, which was a little slow to begin, was crowded for room between Press Gallery and Thunder River, both of which shifted ground. Near the 800m Lady Royale had to be steadied off the heels of Press Gallery after shifting in away from Garland Of Gold. Rounding the first turn Band Aids had to be steadied when momentarily crowded for room by Forest Finch, which shifted in after bumping Press Gallery. At the same point Thunder River and Ya Habibi were crowded for room by Inspect, which was taken in slightly by Lady Royale. At about the 200m Press Gallery had to be checked when crowded for room by Lady Royale, which shifted in abruptly away from Better Succeed. At the same stage Inspect, which was racing to the inside of Press Gallery, also had to be checked when crowded for room between Press Gallery which shifted in when being checked, and Band Aids (B. Pengelly), which shifted out. B. Pengelly was severely reprimanded and advised that in similar circumstances he would be expected to ensure that he is sufficiently clear before shifting ground. When questioned about the disappointing performance of Ya Habibi L. Beasley stated that after being crowded for room at the start the filly was reluctant to race amongst runners and he had suggested to connections that blinkers be added to the gear of Ya Habibi. A post-race veterinary examination of Ya Habibi revealed that the filly had sustained an injury to the off hind bumper during the race. Mr K. Lees, representing trainer Mr M. Lees, was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of Ya Habibi other than the wound to the filly’s hind leg. He said that he would give Ya Habibi a short let-up to allow it to recover from its injury and would then experiment with the blinkers in trackwork. Mr Lees also undertook to report to stewards if anything became apparent in the days subsequent to the race that might explain the filly’s disappointing run.

RACE 7 – Cenovis Handicap 1900m:

In the early stages Lanolin overraced and near the 1300m initially had to be checked off the heels of Nothing Flat and then off the heels of Swing On A Star. Passing the winning post on the first occasion Cheval D’Acier and Ocean Angel, both of which improved quickly, had to be checked when Seattle Ken (App. M. Newman) shifted in. In issuing a reprimand to App. Newman, stewards advised him that they accepted that both Cheval D’Acier and Ocean Angel had improved very quickly to his inside and that when he became aware of the tightening he immediately attempted to relieve the pressure. Approaching the 400m On Avon was steadied when crowded for room between Seattle Ken and Totopoly, which was taken out by Swing On A Star (R. S. Dye). R. S. Dye was reprimanded and advised that he must ensure that he is two lengths clear before shifting ground.

RACE 8 – Mike Hughes Finance Brokers Handicap 1250m:

Diamond Illusion was slow to begin. In the middle stages Has It All overraced. A post-race veterinary examination of Ouroanie, which weakened in the straight, did not reveal any abnormality.

RACE 9 – Bulldogs Race Day Superfecta 1900m:

Tell The Court was a late withdrawal, at 8.58 a.m., on veterinary advice that the gelding was lame in the near fore foot. When the pace slackened passing the winning post on the first occasion, Colamba, Laver and Countershot were hampered. When questioned about Zammalane racing forward in the field today L. Beasley stated that he had been instructed to take up a forward position at the horse’s most recent start, however he had been unable to do so. He added that today, from the mare’s wide barrier and with no established pace in the race Zammalane was able to take up a forward position.
